Instead, people sometimes hid their valuables in buried jars to keep them safe from thieves. In ancient times, no one put their money in a bank. Possibly, the treasure was a clay jar filled with gold, silver, or coins. Whatever he was doing, it must have been a wonderful surprise to have found a valuable treasure. He didn’t own the field where he found it so he might have been working for someone, perhaps planting, farming, or constructing. The man somehow stumbled upon a treasure. For that reason, I’ll separate both in my commentary. However, the focus of what the kingdom of God represents appears to shift from the object of value (the hidden treasure) to the person searching (the merchant), giving the Hidden Treasure Parable a different focus and importance than the Pearl Parable. Many people have interpreted them as one and the same. While both parables are very similar, it’s wise to note at least one important difference. As soon as he finished his explanation of that parable, he immediately told them the Hidden Treasure and Valuable Pearl Parables, as if to emphasize the importance of the preceding “kingdom” parables he’d told that day.
